What is DALI system?

The DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) bus is a communication bus for light ballasts that allows us to control luminaires with more advanced functions than just switching on or off. The DALI protocol falls under the DiiA alliance, which was founded by leading lighting manufacturers with the idea of aggregating and improving all existing luminaire control under one system and making it available to the wider public. It refers to the IEC 62386 standard, which means that all devices are compatible with each other.

The basis is a special light ballast and DALIpwr power supply, which powers all DALI perfieries, including the light ballasts. For convenient control, use the FTC control unit and connect to a DALI to ETH converter, called DALInet or DALI2net. Connect the control buttons and sensors to the two-wire and configure the control system using the DALIconfig software, which is available as a free download.

The DALI bus uses conventional power cables to connect the devices. The maximum transmission distance is 300 metres.

Due to its resistance to interference, the DALI bus can be routed together with the power conductors in a single cable with a conductor cross section of 5x1.5mm².

The DALI bus is an internationally recognized standard, which means a wide availability and choice of compatible equipment on the market.

DALI bus controlled lighting provides not only the convenience of flexible LED lighting control but also significant energy savings. There are two reasons for this - DALI sensors and the time switching of LED luminaires. At the same time, individual luminaires or entire circuits can be switched on at a lower than maximum level, which means that the luminaires in your building can meet the standard lux levels at any time, and quite precisely. With motion-switched DALI sensors, the entire system can be relieved of idle time. The DALI system can also be supplemented with a timer, and by using all the functionality of the DALI bus, significant energy savings can be achieved.

DALI and DALI-2 protocol

The DALI bus is a digital replacement for the now obsolete 1-10V analogue system. 1-10V dimming is an analogue dimming method that uses an electrical signal with a DC voltage in the range of 1-10V to control the light intensity of luminaires. It is a simpler and more traditional method of dimming lighting that is often used in applications where control of individual luminaires is not required. DALI, on the other hand, is a digital lighting control protocol that allows individual and precise control of luminaires. Each DALI-compliant luminaire has a unique address, meaning it can be controlled independently of other luminaires. The DALI protocol offers high flexibility in creating complex lighting scenarios and can be used for intelligent lighting systems.
