DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is the international standard for
lighting control according to IEC 62386. All DALI manufacturers must comply with
this standard and therefore its units compatible with the units of other
DALI device manufacturers.
The DALI line is routed in two conductors. These wires can be connected arbitrarily (star-shaped, circular, etc.)
Almost any wires can be used. The only thing that matters is the cross section of the conductor, which depends on its length. The following table shows the minimum cross-sections for individual distances of copper wire:

For most manufacturers it does not matter how the units are connected to the bus - both wires are interchangeable.
A maximum of 64 ballasts and 64 drivers can be connected per bus. The limitation is determined by the addressing. It also depends on the power supply of the DALI bus. The standard states that the power supply can supply a maximum of 250 mA. According to the standard, one ballast can draw a maximum of 2 mA. There is no limitation for drivers.
Example: the power supply will be at 200 mA. If we have 64 ballasts that draw 2 mA each, we will have 72 mA left for the drivers. Note: In reality, the ballasts draw less than 2 mA and the power supply can supply more (e.g. DALIpwr 240 mA).
Yes, this is solved by multiple individual DALI buses (each with 64 ballasts) that are grouped together using appropriate units.
Example: 300 lights need to be controlled in a hall. These lights will be divided into 5 DALI buses (the last bus has only 44 lights) and the buses will be connected to one touch panel using DALInet units, which will control all 300 lights.
According to the standard, the maximum number of scenes is 16 and the number of groups is also 16.
Yes, the DALI bus needs a special power supply.
Yes, some devices can be powered directly from the bus (e.g. DALI4sw, DALIlux,...). Some need external power supply.
